Wind River Brewing Company has been a Pinedale mainstay for more than 20 years, but it has been getting attention far beyond the small town’s borders since Roy DeWitt and his partner Derek Schupp purchased it 18 months ago.

“As soon as we bought it, we added to the canning side of the operation,” DeWitt said.

Now, 16-ounce cans of three brew styles are available statewide. Wind River Brewing is eyeing Utah and the Dakotas next and the company was recently recognized as one of the top 15 fastest growing breweries in the nation.

“We’re just riding the rollercoaster,” Dewitt said.

DeWitt and his wife moved back to Pinedale nearly a decade ago. They wanted to be able to create new value within their community, and the brewery was the perfect vehicle. They have added a couple new jobs, and the cans all feature the striking Wind River Range, the town’s logo and the brewery’s address.

“It’s great advertising for Pinedale. It’s important to us to be a community-based business that could add a little economic diversification to the area,” Dewitt said.

Dewitt works closely with local vendors and, when that’s not feasible, he seeks Wyoming companies. For example, he tries to use products from Wyoming Malting Company, another Made in Wyoming company, as often as possible.

First and foremost, however, Wind River Brewing focuses on quality. It shows. Their porter has won several gold medals at competitions around the country, including the renowned Great American Beer Festival.

On the horizon, DeWitt hopes to bring a taste of Pinedale to Taiwan. He plans to attend a trade mission with the Wyoming Business Council, the state’s economic development agency, in June to find a distributor.

Even if the company does go global, DeWitt will keep his focus local.

“We’re not taking over the world here, we’re just trying to be good corporate citizens in our community and pay it forward with a little goodwill and have a little fun.”
