Leathermaker keeps the Wild West alive

Bill Becker has been tooling leather most of his adult life.

“After I retired from UW, I decided I wanted to do a lot more of it,” Becker said with a laugh.

He and his daughter started Snowy Range Leather in 2015. Since then, they’ve sold things like wallets, purses, notebooks and more to people all over – even as far as England.

Becker said he loves the Western lifestyle and wants to see it continue through long-lasting, heirloom-type products. When people buy his products, he added, it helps keep the Wild West alive.

“Too many things in the world today are throwaway,” Becker explained. “I’d like to reverse that with things that last.”

A former electrical engineer, Becker uses leather tooling as a creative outlet. He also uses it to help his physical well-being.

“I’ve got a bad back, but if I can concentrate, I can get the pain to fade into the background,” Becker said. “Tooling leather affords me a chance to do that.”
